After reading the great lesson review from Vada at the-exponent.com, I was inspired by a follow-up comment. A reader suggested bringing in the story of the Apollo 8 space mission, and the events surrounding it--particularly the "earthrise" that the witnessed. I won't go into detail myself, but an account of the story is found here:
http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/imagegallery/image_feature_102.html
and

I decided to put this picture, along with newly-released Hubble Telescope photographs to a slideshow as an attention-getter at the beginning of my lesson. The audio background is the astronauts of Apollo 8 reading from Genesis. My video is under 3 minutes and can be downloaded here:

I suggest giving a brief background to your class before showing the video.
Feel free to leave comments in the comment section! I'd love to know if someone uses this video.
Very cool. Thank you for sharing!
ReplyDeleteErin - Thanks so much for the beautiful presentation! I am so impressed with the quality of your work! Thank you for sharing your talents with those of us who are not quite so tech savy! I am planning to show your presentation in RS this Sunday. The ladies will love it! Thanks again!
ReplyDeleteDear Erin: Thanks so much--I plan on using your video for my lesson this Sunday as well. Our ward library is woefully inadequate when it comes to pictures on this subject and even the distribution center had nothing to offer in the way of pictures of the heavens. This will fill that void for the sisters in our ward. Thanks again! Jan
ReplyDeleteI really want to see this, but I'm getting a "video not found" error. I tried pulling it up with two different browsers, too! I'd love to use this for my lesson. Help?
ReplyDeleteBossy, I'm not sure what the problem is, but if you give me your email, I'll send it to you.
ReplyDeleteI'm having the same problem as BossyMommy and like her I'd love to use it for my lesson Sunday. Can you help?
ReplyDeleteI saw it yesterday and LOVED it, but am now getting the same error. Is there any chance you can e-mail it to me too?
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry, I hope this isn't to much to ask.

ReplyDeleteJust got the video from the 4shared website. Hooray! Thank you so much. The video is fantastic!
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure what the problem was with the first link. I have added another link in the post called "Creation Slideshow 2". Let me know if it works for you!
ReplyDeleteThank you SO MUCH for sharing your hard work!
ReplyDeleteValarie
Thank you, I am going to use this Sunday!
ReplyDeleteThank you Thank you! I was just going to play the sound only of Apollo 8 on my ipod dock...now I have wonderful slide show. I am excited to use it Sunday.
ReplyDeleteI will be using your video for my lesson on Sunday. Thanks SO much for sharing it!
ReplyDeleteSay, I was extremely impressed with this little slide show and plan on using it in the High Priests class tomorrow. Thanks for taking the time to build it! It downloaded fine to my hard drive.

Wow, how fantastic that you would put so much effort into helping others. Thank you! I am teaching tomorrow and would love to see the slideshow, but it won't open. Any help??? Or, have I missed the opportunity?

thank you!
Tess~ I have added a third link to the video. Please let me know if it doesn't work, and I can try another way. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteYes! It worked. thank you so, so much. you know, these lessons are challenging because they are short and relatively basic. I know it is important to discuss these basic gospel principles, but teaching for 45 minutes off 2 1/2 pages is a challenge.
ReplyDeletethis video is beautiful, moving, inspiring. I know the sisters will enjoy it :D
Erin- Thanks so much, this is great! I have it saved to my desktop but can't figure out how to save to DVD. Is it not DVD compatible? Without a laptop I'm not sure how I will be able to share this. Can anybody help?
ReplyDeleteThanks, Erin, for the beautiful slideshow. I used it for my lesson today and it had a great impact. Thank you so much for sharing your talents! Always looking for spiritual additions to these lessons.
ReplyDeleteI wanted to report back and let you know that I was able to show the slideshow without any problem at RS yesterday. It was a beautiful way to start the lesson, brought the spirit, and made me a hero ;) everyone kept saying, "you put so much time into that lesson!". I told them I had an angel online who did all the work.
ReplyDeletethanks so much.
And - for Mel: I had to get a member of our Elders Quorum who was good at computers to set it up w/ my laptop/a projector/screen. Like a power point presentation.
The video was wonderful yesterday and was a great addition to the lesson. Thank you for all of your hard work. I'm hoping that you plan to use this site for more of your great ideas. Thanks again.
ReplyDeleteThank you all for your encouraging comments! Grama, you are so kind. I only teach the second week of every month, but when I do, I will put anything I use on this site.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your incredible video. I used it in my lesson and it was just the perfect finishing touch!
ReplyDeleteHi, Love this video and would like to use it Sunday. We are a week behind because of Stake Conf in January. I have downloaded 2 and 3rd versions, but when I go to play, it says "Windows Media Player encountered a problem while playing the file." Do you have any suggestions?
ReplyDeleteThanks,
jenmcginty(dot)gmail(dot)com
Thank you for using your talents in putting this slideshow together and sharing it with us. My husband and I are both planning on using it as part of our lessons on Sunday.
ReplyDeletemcjenn, I'm really not sure what the problem could be. Are you able to open other videos with Windows Media Player? You could try opening the video through another program on your computer. If that fails, maybe ask a nice friend from your ward if they could try the link on their computer. I just downloaded the files to test them, and they worked fine for me. Perhaps it's a problem with your computer.
ReplyDeleteErin,
ReplyDeleteI want to let you know how much I apprecaite your wonderful video!! I did use it in my RS lesson and it REALLY set the tone for the lesson and brought in the Spirit. Many of the sister were very touched by the video and Gensis reading. It was just perfect and I so appreciate your sharing you work so freely with people you do not even know.
Thank you for sharing your talent.
I would so love to use this link in my lesson on Sunday, but I cannot get it to open. Would you mind emailing it to me? Thank you so much. I am so excited!
