Gospel Principles Lesson 5 ~ The Creation

UPDATED LINKS!  See below...

After reading the great lesson review from Vada at the-exponent.com,  I was inspired by a follow-up comment.  A reader suggested bringing in the story of the Apollo 8 space mission, and the events surrounding it--particularly the "earthrise" that the witnessed.  I won't go into detail myself, but an account of the story is found here:

and

I decided to put this picture, along with newly-released Hubble Telescope photographs to a slideshow as an attention-getter at the beginning of my lesson.  The audio background is the astronauts of Apollo 8 reading from Genesis.  My video is under 3 minutes and can be downloaded here:

I suggest giving a brief background to your class before showing the video.

Feel free to leave comments in the comment section!  I'd love to know if someone uses this video.

  2. Erin - Thanks so much for the beautiful presentation! I am so impressed with the quality of your work! Thank you for sharing your talents with those of us who are not quite so tech savy! I am planning to show your presentation in RS this Sunday. The ladies will love it! Thanks again!

  3. Dear Erin: Thanks so much--I plan on using your video for my lesson this Sunday as well. Our ward library is woefully inadequate when it comes to pictures on this subject and even the distribution center had nothing to offer in the way of pictures of the heavens. This will fill that void for the sisters in our ward. Thanks again! Jan

  19. Yes! It worked. thank you so, so much. you know, these lessons are challenging because they are short and relatively basic. I know it is important to discuss these basic gospel principles, but teaching for 45 minutes off 2 1/2 pages is a challenge.

this video is beautiful, moving, inspiring. I know the sisters will enjoy it :D

  20. Erin- Thanks so much, this is great! I have it saved to my desktop but can't figure out how to save to DVD. Is it not DVD compatible? Without a laptop I'm not sure how I will be able to share this. Can anybody help?

  22. I wanted to report back and let you know that I was able to show the slideshow without any problem at RS yesterday. It was a beautiful way to start the lesson, brought the spirit, and made me a hero ;) everyone kept saying, "you put so much time into that lesson!". I told them I had an angel online who did all the work.

    thanks so much.

And - for Mel: I had to get a member of our Elders Quorum who was good at computers to set it up w/ my laptop/a projector/screen. Like a power point presentation.

  26. Hi, Love this video and would like to use it Sunday. We are a week behind because of Stake Conf in January. I have downloaded 2 and 3rd versions, but when I go to play, it says "Windows Media Player encountered a problem while playing the file." Do you have any suggestions?
    Thanks,

  27. Thank you for using your talents in putting this slideshow together and sharing it with us. My husband and I are both planning on using it as part of our lessons on Sunday.

  28. mcjenn, I'm really not sure what the problem could be. Are you able to open other videos with Windows Media Player? You could try opening the video through another program on your computer. If that fails, maybe ask a nice friend from your ward if they could try the link on their computer. I just downloaded the files to test them, and they worked fine for me. Perhaps it's a problem with your computer.

  29. Erin,
I want to let you know how much I apprecaite your wonderful video!! I did use it in my RS lesson and it REALLY set the tone for the lesson and brought in the Spirit. Many of the sister were very touched by the video and Gensis reading. It was just perfect and I so appreciate your sharing you work so freely with people you do not even know.
Thank you for sharing your talent.
